Europe makes up less than a quarter of Live, says Microsoft
July 31st, 2008 @ 15:09
Speaking in the latest issue of Edge, Microsoft Europe boss Chris Lewis has said that Europe makes up “less than a quarter” of Xbox Live’s total membership, mostly down to language differences.
“We don’t normally break out the European element of our Live membership,” said Lewis. “I mean, I know what it is, but I don’t want to get rapped on the knuckles by being too explicit with you. I will say to you as a percentage of that overall total, it’s just less than a quarter.”
America has “the lion’s share” of Xbox Live users, he said.
Thanks, CVG.

Probably down to UK broadband still being a bit expensive/shit and the rest of Europe loving the PS3 more.

Brits. Always trying to be special. Driving on the wrong side of the road, sticking to the pound, using imperial measurments and playing games on Xbox360.

The UK makes up the most of that quarter, MS has not done a very good job with localization and bringing it’s other services (e.g marketplace) to the EU in a more timely fashion so I can see why many ignore the online aspect of the Xbox.
To be fair they are trying to turn that around in the EU after opening up more regional offices but it will take some time as Sony has much more experience in the the EU & dealing with localisation (even simple things like the addition what languages you speak to your PSN ID).

per Syrok,
Could be worse. You could be French! ;p
Tell me, what do you think MS should do (or could do) to create a larger market share in Europe or in the UK in particular. I’m in the States so I have no idea what the scoop is.

I don’t know I’m not in the buissnes so all I can do is guess.
My best guess is that Microsoft can’t do much but hope that one day Playstation is not a synonym for “gamesconsole” anymore.

no wonder they didn’t want to announce it.

A perfect example of how MS has dropped the ball in the rest of Europe, is Greece. Here, Live isn’t even officially supported, so many years after release. We have to get around numerous shit to be able to buy MS points etc and download things.
On the contrary, Sony has given us a Greek PS Store and all its other European services. Greece has been Sony land forever and that won’t be changing any time soon…

Remember that EU is a hard market to cater: E.g., just all the different laws for game rating make it hard to push online content. Afaik, in Germany, even videos have be rated, so imagine loads of bureaucrat stuff.
Maybe will be one day a EU that makes Europe that unity it already is for most businesses.
