Rumour: Complaints arise over PS3 Firmware 2.42
August 3rd, 2008 @ 19:09
According to this Product Reviews piece, complaints are emerging over PS3’s Firmware 2.42, including loss of Blu-ray functionality and an inability to connect to online games after updating.
We’ve no idea how widespread this is, but we’ll ask Sony for comment tomorrow.

Gotta love this generation of consoles.

I’ve had no problems with mine at all. One of the complaints there says the machine’s stopped reading discs altogether.

No problems on this end. Can’t be too wide spread.

pat: That’s probably co-incidental… drive failure is by far the most common issue with the PS3 and with 10 million or so out there it wouldn’t surprise me if a drive or two died around the same time as someone updating their firmware.

Ja. I haven’t seen this anywhere else at all, so hopefully it’s just the odd incident.

Oh FFS! Not this again. The failure rate for 2.40 was f’ing miniscule yet sites (yes, this one included) blew it out of all proportion.

As I said at the time - as did many others - a global PS3 software update that causes some consoles to completely die and is pulled by Sony as a result is a large news story. It just is.

Before the firmware was pulled it was reported on this site about a “myriad” of problems and complaints. The links posted led to threads on the official Sony boards where one problem and thread was resolved quite quickly as having nothing to do with the firmware update problem and on the other the vast majority of people were reporting no problems.

The Sony pull was more the news story than the failures. Apparently a delay in fixing the 2.40 issue was related to Sony having trouble getting hold of a bricked console to analyse what went wrong - that’s how extensive that failure was.

Well, problems were reported and Sony pulled the update. It was news. Which is what we do

Happend to me, too. After 2.41 though. I blame the laser and not the firmware.

I also updated to firmware 2.42 a few days ago. No problems
for 2 days, 3rd day: “suddenly” cannot play BD or DVD no more.
