Carmack - “Steve Jobs doesn’t care about games”

August 4th, 2008 @ 14:21

Speaking to Eurogamer at QuakeCon last week, id tech boss John Carmack said the reason Apple doesn’t drive gaming is down to company’s CEO.

“The truth is Steve Jobs doesn’t care about games. This is going to be one of those things that I say something in an interview and it gets fed back to him and I’m on his shithead list for a while on that, until he needs me to do something else there. But I think that that’s my general opinion. He’s not a gamer,” he said.

“It’s difficult to ask somebody to get behind something they don’t really believe in. I mean obviously he believes in the music and the iTunes and that whole side of things, and the media side of things, and he gets it and he pushes it and they do wonderful things with that, but he’s not a gamer. That’s just the bottom line about it.”

There’s a full interview here.

I agree Jobs doesn’t like Games. However, the massive numbers games are putting up on the iPhone App Store will likely see him change his itune about the genre. I can see him courting Carmack and others to exclusive deals. Doom 4 on iPhone? or Quake? How about a version of Rage?

There again Apple have had years and many chances to get into gaming. They’ve even given it a go at times but there doesn’t seem to be the motivation to keep at it so i doubt much will change now. I agree that the iPhone may change this but until there’s a will at the top to get gaming right i think they may get bored and leave again, maybe some 3rd parties will continue to develop games but i think Apple consider themselves above it tbh.

Edward at WWDC Apple gae games on iphone a lot of exposure. I think gaming will thrive on iphone, with or without Apple’s full support. It is a huge market now.
