Gosen: “We WILL outsell the PlayStation 3″
August 6th, 2008 @ 15:31

European Xbox marketing boss David Gosen, in a presentation at Chelsea football club today reaffirmed the company’s intention to beat PS3 this generation in terms of sales.
The last slide in his talk said: “We WILL outsell the PlayStation 3″.
“We’re going to invest in this region to ensure we win,” he told attendees.

But its already losing!

BOLL#OCKS, I’D LOVE TO WIPE THE SMILE OFF THAT SMARMY GITS FACE, BUT IM SURE SONY WILL IN TIME,
DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE THE POWER OF PLAYSTATION
August 6th, 2008 at 3:45 pm
They need to do something about Europe if they want to do that. They’re a bit stupid to be cocky like this.
August 6th, 2008 at 3:57 pm
Like Kaz said though, are they in it with a ten year plan, or will 360 be a memory in five years?
Anyway, let ‘em fight it out. It’s great that the games industry has such strong companies investing in it, it keeps everyone on their toes, and ensures top features, games and competitive prices.

*says nothing*
August 6th, 2008 at 4:20 pm
Strong words.
I would be shocked if it’s true. It sounds like last legs talk.
August 6th, 2008 at 4:24 pm
I’m hoping to get an interview with David soon, actually. Be good to talk to him about this stuff.
August 6th, 2008 at 4:34 pm
Grill him if you do get the chance.
I would like to know how he coudl support those claims.
But It’s a fine line between being rude and uncovering faults (and never getting and interview again) and beign polite and gettign information with the companies bias in it.
Well….
Good luck.

If they drop the euro price following the US price cut who knows… that could boost sales dramatically especially in the fall. You guys have to remember that price is a huge factor for many and there are certainly a lot of people who have not made the jump to current gen strictly based on cost.
MS will have some heavy momentum going in their favor with the US (and possibly Euro price drop), the new xbox experience roll out, Fallout 3 and of course Gears 2.
August 6th, 2008 at 5:23 pm
Price isn’t going to help them in Europe. They need millions of pounds worth of advertising and a complete image makeover.
August 6th, 2008 at 5:29 pm
@Psychotext
Don’t ever underestimate the power of cost. But I agree wth the image bit. I think they are working on that and they are starting with the xbox experience, which IMHO is a good start. But like others here have said this is all marketing talk and the proof is in the pudding. Can they back this up? They certainly think so, and I have a sneaking suspicion that MS has somethingup their corporate sleeves.

@ mortiferus
Don’t ever underestimate the power of “image”.
No price-cut whatsoever will let Microsoft lead the console-war in Europe or Japan.
August 6th, 2008 at 6:07 pm
… the new xbox “experience” is just a new coat of paint stolen aesthetically from all kinds of places and definitely not “the magic of software”.
Real magic has a different look …
August 6th, 2008 at 6:44 pm
I’ll have some of what you’re smoking Quiiick. Or at least a description of the magical things you see!
August 6th, 2008 at 7:06 pm
Even if Sony themselves admitted 360 was the better machine and would sell more Quiick would probably dispute it.
August 6th, 2008 at 7:13 pm
I just think that EU is lost to them somewhat. It’s got the image of a 12-14 year old’s thing, and Halo was the only reason it sold in the first place.
The X really doesn’t do anything for them. They could have named it a multitude of things that avoided 90’s ‘radical’ linguistic trends, and I am sure their image would been better.
Or do I mean XBetter?
August 6th, 2008 at 7:22 pm
@ Quiiick:
Don’t ever underestimate the power of “ Both a Larger Library of Games, a low hardware price… and MS’ Deep Pockets”.
While I do agree that the “new xbox “experience” is nothing to get too exited about for the hardcore gamer, I must acknowledge that it is a step in the right direction for MS. It is gunning for the … casual crowd and social gamers.
Plus, when combined with the 3D Mii’s and the other as of yet unkownn software projects that will use it, it “might” turn out to be a unique selling point. Finally it is a hell of a lot nicer than the minimalist XMB. nuff said.
August 6th, 2008 at 7:53 pm
@No_PUDding: I wouldn’t go so far as “lost”… they’re selling a lot better than the original xbox did here, but when you’ve got the Wii trampling over everyone, everywhere you don’t stand a chance.
The best they can do is get solid sales for the rest of the gen and capitalise in the US.
August 6th, 2008 at 9:39 pm
I just stumpled upon this interesting chart.
Just telling.
August 6th, 2008 at 9:49 pm
wz: That query changes quite a lot depending on what terms you use. I.E:
This one is for xbox, wii and PS3
This one is for xbox 360, wii and PS3
Your original one was for “xbox360″ (no space)

The comment monster ate my post.

What happened? Gimme a sec.
August 6th, 2008 at 9:58 pm
Ta-daaa!
August 6th, 2008 at 10:03 pm
Hello all. I see the schools are out.
August 6th, 2008 at 10:07 pm
Thanks.
(stupid comment monster)
August 6th, 2008 at 10:07 pm
PT: Most interesting indeed. The original search was one of the examples of Google Insights for Search, so I just copy’n'pasted it.
Now, it’s even better to glue it all together: look at this, Nintendo dropped below the others.
Ah, statistics, looks like fact, means like nothing.
August 6th, 2008 at 10:08 pm
What about this one?
August 6th, 2008 at 10:08 pm
Mine’s been eaten too. Monster hates links.
Just make it
to see Nintendo fall below the others!
Oh, and my eaten comment mentions I would not try to put meaning into that
August 6th, 2008 at 10:09 pm
Blerk: This one is better
August 6th, 2008 at 10:10 pm
But yeah, it’s a interesting enough tool… but far better if you can be very specific (model numbers etc).
August 6th, 2008 at 11:52 pm
@ morriss
No need to call me a Sony-fanboy.
I owned an Xbox360 long before I bought a PS3.
I just think Microsoft made a lot of mistakes with the 360 (starting it all with the ugly RRoD issue …) and that is why I believe they have no chance.
Back in 2005 I thought Sony was really disrespecting their users but they changed quite a lot since then.
August 6th, 2008 at 11:54 pm
Have they?
August 7th, 2008 at 12:07 am
Yes, I think so! But it’s quite difficult to prove it for 2 reasons:
1.) English is not my native language!
2.) The mistakes Microsoft made are on a meta-level of communications. They are really bad in figuring out what you need to establish a high-quality brand image. Unlike Sony, Nintendo or Apple, for example, they have no idea how to create “style”. And this lack of knowledge/feeling will be the main reason they will fail IMHO.
August 7th, 2008 at 12:11 am
Nintendo don’t do style Quiiick. They do accessibility.
August 7th, 2008 at 12:13 am
PT: What Nintendo does is style-y, the casual in-your-living-room style, perfectly matched to your iPod and iLife and iWhatever.
Still, I like the Wii.
August 7th, 2008 at 12:16 am
@ Psychotext
No, they certainly do stylish hardware, like Apple (see also wz’s post).
And yes, they are VERY accessible.
August 7th, 2008 at 12:19 am
There’s nothing stylish about it. It’s just small.
You’re mistaking popularity with style (as so many do).
August 7th, 2008 at 12:28 am
Quiick. My apologies. I’ve got you completely confused with another user. Sorry about that.
Also, your English is excellent. Sorry again.
August 7th, 2008 at 12:33 am
There really is no reason to continue my argument if you can’t see the subtlety of Nintendo’s style:
The way they mix “white & light blue”, the way they do their advertisement, the way they design the package of the console & the accessories, the naming of the console, and, and …
August 7th, 2008 at 12:36 am
@ morris
Thanks for the compliment!
August 7th, 2008 at 1:05 am
Oh, I wont disagree that the design of the thing is a total cash in on the iPod craze. That’s a certainty.
