GC08: “Next gen” EyeToy game to be revealed in Sony presser today
August 20th, 2008 @ 07:08

VG247 has learnt this morning that the “next generation” of EyeToy is to be shown in the Sony press conference at Games Convention today.
We weren’t told what the game would be specifically, but we do know Sony considers the reveal to be a significant part of the conference, which takes place at the show at 5.00pm CET.
Sony’s press conference is leaking a little this morning, with a Gamekyo story based on a sneak look at a run-through of the event yesterday revealing that a new version of SingStar it to feature heavily in the presentation.
We’ll be bringing you the conference live.

Excellent, although I’d much prefer to hear about when devs are going to start implementing that head-tracking technology demoed at GDC into games

Hmmm I wonder if it will be that Eyetoy Nike thing. With all the interest in Wii Fit etc, Sony could do a lot worse than revive that thing. It wasn’t actually too bad, apart from the old eyetoy’s tendency to ignore a lot of movement

This is the ‘EyeToy detects colours now’ thing, right? So you wave a big green plastic sword in front of it and it detects what you’re doing with it. Motion-control without a Wiimote, like. Don’t we know all this already? I’m beginning to think I dreamed it.

I predicted this
I hope they advertise this effectively so it gets a tiny Wii effect.
I bought the last Eyetoy, and it’s so much fun to play with friends. Playign it on stomachs full of alcohol and food is never advisable though.
@ Blerk …Dream… Or maybe I missed it.

It’s true. You wait and see. Big, green sword. Waving it around in front of the telly. BELIEVE!

Why can’t they just go the whole hog and rip off the Wii mote. Fuck all this half arsed camera gubbins. Fat people don’t want to see themselves on TV… it wont work!

Rip off? Eye Toy was great way before the Wii.
Admittedly the Eyetoy fitness thing, didn’t work half as well. But it still sold pretty solidly.
@Blerk, I think I do BELIEVE, in fact, I REMEMBER. Well somethign of the sort.

They have changed how it works - you don’t have to see yourself on the screen any more.
I’m beginning to think I’ve slipped into a parallel universe where none of this has happened yet. Did the story leak and get pulled or something? It works with the PS2 as well, iirc.

No_PUDding: That’s not what I’m saying No_Pud. Obviously the eye toy stuff isn’t a rip off of the Wiimote. I’m saying that they might as well just do it so we have options as consumers.

Haha, it was a dream if it works with the PS2.
I seem to rememeber the colours thing.
Psychotext, Hmmm, maybe you’re right. I just think that Eyetoy Play is enough, and can draw in as much of the casual as possible. Maybe this is the migration effect PS3 eventually wants when it has a plausible price.
I see what you’re saying though.

That “Eyetoy Fitness thing” you’re on about was an absolute KILLER. It made any of the aerobic stuff in Wii Fit look like a stroll in the park in comparison. Good work out, most of the time because the tech was so wibbly it made you work twice as hard as you needed to.

Oh and the colours thing- I’ve got an old Edge PS2 special with the early Eyetoy stuff in it, the PS2 era stuff, and that was all colour-controlled. Weird how they’ve now gone back to that rather than movement detection but I guess it makes sense. As Blerk said, there’s more sense in producing non-active peripherals of certain colours rather than making something hideously expensive and packed with accelerometers and electronics.

I suspsect the PSeye is capable of detecting both movement and colour.
