Re-Rumour: Gearbox’s “big” title is Halo 4

As you can read on Joystiq, the US OXM is rumouring that Gearbox is working on Halo 4, due for release with the next Xbox.

This isn’t the stupidest idea in the world, and has been mooted before. Studio head Randy Pitchford said in February that Gearbox had started work on a “big” game.

“It’s, like, look-at-our-line-up-and-imagine-something-even-bigger kind of big,” he said. “I’m directing it myself. I can’t mention it publicly yet. When you find out what this is, you’ll likely agree that I can’t oversell this one.”

Surfer Girl - we miss you: come back - instantly rumoured the game as being set in the Halo universe.

Bungie dropped a very heavy hint recently that it isn’t working on the next Halo game, saying:

“Halo 4? Guys, Microsoft owns the IP now. Take it up with them. Have your people call their people,” said a spokesman.

There’s probably a rolling stone here. Watch as it gathers moss.

  1. I thought it was pretty much 100% that they were working on Halo 4. For the life of me I can’t remember where I first heard it though.

  2. Sounds amazingly plausible to me.

I thought that Gearbox’s “big” title was Aliens: Colonial Marines.

Also, why has the site slowed to a crawl? It’s practically lethargic, today! :(

  4. Working fine for me SH.

  5. I think it’s the ads. Looking into it now.

I think Aliens was announced well before February. In fact yes, it was.

  6. It’s the due for release with the next Xbox line that raises the most eyebrows. So say they’re looking at a 2 - 3 year development cycle, does that mean the next Xbox is a cert for 2011?

The site’s nice and speedy again, now. Good job. :)

  8. Gearbox have a pedigree as they did the port of Halo:CE to the PC. Next Xbox though? That’s a long way off although given it’s taken them this long to get Brothers in Arms out (and they’ve Borderlands, Aliens, something else) to finish maybe not.

As PC devs they won’t mind working on hardware that isn’t fixed yet either.

  9. They have pedigree? I love Brothers in Arms, but what else have they done? Serious question.

My guess is, that the next Xbox (720 or whatever it is called) is on the market even earlier:
    How about October 2010?

  11. I guess I meant previous rather than pedigree as they did Halo: CE. That asides they’ve done a ton of Half Life expansions, a Tony Hawk game with Neversoft and shortly Samba Di Amigo for Sega.

October 2010 would make it about 5 years since the 360 came out (which is about normal for a release cycle)… so it wouldn’t surprise me.

It’s either going to be late 2010 or 2011 in my opinion. I used to think 2010 but it’s looking more like 2011.

  13. Wow.

That’s 2 years, I guess it’s not that soon. I still won’t be on buying terms with anything though.

  14. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s 2012. The generation change was quite painful for most this time around. After the $1bn fiasco for Microsoft I doubt they’re in a rush to get moving, Nintendo are raking it in and Sony seem pretty confident their 10 year plan will pay-off and they’ll still make some money.

Will Wii HD count as next gen? :P
