Speaking to Die Welt, Sony boss Howard Stringer has admitted that Nintendo’s wacky idea of actually making money on hardware may be “superior” to the opposite.
“The major difference lies in the fact that Nintendo makes money with the hardware alone, which may be a superior business model,” he said.
“But the Wii is not succeeding at our expense – it is not hurting us. We decided years ago to build a game console that offers much greater functionality. The Playstation 3 has an enormous processor; it is gradually emerging as the central server in our users’ homes.”

That’s an interesting interview. Stringer seems like a really frank guy to speak to, and if his comments are anything to go by, I think you’ll see PS4 being far cheaper to produce.
In many respects, I think it could suit Sony to let MS go first with their next offering. They can see the tech and price they’ll have to match, and see where they want to go with it. Obviously the basics will be nailed down years in advance, but I imagine things like ram, graphics chip etc. could be quite late in the day decisions.

Confirmation that they’re still losing money on the hardware too. I wouldn’t hold out a lot of hope for a price cut.
