PC Games gives Spore 73%, talk of release date online embargo emerges (updated)
September 2nd, 2008 @ 12:57

Update: We’ve just been told that other major German PC mag, Gamestar, has scored the game at 79 percent.
Uh oh. Leading German mag PC Games has reviewed Spore at 73 percent, VG247 has learnt today.
Apparently the review can be summed up thus:
For:
- The Creature Creator
- Great animation
- Endless Content through downloads
- Tons of community features
Against:
- No real depth until the fifth stage
- Uneasy mix of simulation and strategy
- It’s easier to wage war then to be diplomatic
- No “one more go” aspect
We’ve also been told this morning by German and Scandinavian sources that online European reviews are strictly embargoed until the game launches on Friday.
EA was unavailable for comment at the time of writing.
The German score comes after UK’s PC Gamer gave the game 91 percent in a cover review.
Consider our ears pricked up.

Hmmm.
It’ll be hilarious if the creature creator ends up selling more than the actual game.

Just updated it.

The actual game bit of this has been raising an eyebrow since they first announced it, so it wouldn’t surprise me to see it turn out to be not quite the blockbuster some people were expecting.
The tech is really cool, though, and you have to give them props for trying something so different and so ambitious. No doubt they’ll fix everything up good for Spore 2.

Be very interesting to see what the UK lot give it.

I’ve been concerned about the actual gameplay of this for a while. I really like the civilization aspects but I think it’s got too much of a reliance on the customisation.

I’ll play it because I have to, but if I didn’t I wouldn’t. I can’t believe it isn’t the most amazing thing ever given how long they’ve been working on it.

I’d be quite interested to give it a go, if my PC wasn’t a load of old knackers.
September 2nd, 2008 at 1:32 pm
I think it’ll run on pretty old machines.
September 2nd, 2008 at 1:46 pm
Not as old as my machine. Betcha.

And I was right. I don’t meet the minimum specs on processor speed or video card specs. PCs suck.

“EA was unavailable for comment at the time of writing.”
Why will EA comment on a review? ‘Oh someone thinks our game is OK’ *shurg*

What’s Sackboy doing up there in the small pic?
Oh, and I think GameStar is the leading PC game magazine in Germany, isn’t it?

“And I was right. I don’t meet the minimum specs on processor speed or video card specs. PCs suck.”
My PC is nearly five years old, and even it exceeds the minimum requirements.
Something “sucks” here indeed, but it’s not PCs.

It’s official. The game is pants.
September 2nd, 2008 at 2:53 pm
Since when was scores between 70% - 80% considered “bad” scores?
Only in the snobby world of gaming, I guess.
September 2nd, 2008 at 2:54 pm
Newbie - I was after comment on embargo date.
September 2nd, 2008 at 3:01 pm
Michael, it’s not bad. Eurogamer evened everythign out yesterday when Mercs 2 scored 5/10.
Perhaps this is the turnaroudn point this generation. when thigns start getting marked for what they are rather than based on their next gen flare.
We aren’t surprised anymore, so scores will gte lower and lower.

Yay, it runs on my MacBook (theoretically).

“It’s easier to wage war then to be diplomatic ”
How unrealistic!

Lol ^
I wanted to create a game where you ultimately ended up recreating 9/11 becuase it was easier.
Then a dramatic cutscene would arouse, and you’d be left thinking: Holy-OMG-IMNOBETTERTHANGEORGE.W.BUSH!!!!

I was lucky enough to get to to play at PAX, and it is actually very good. It really sucks you in with all of the decisions you get to make. Also, if for some strange reason you want to play Spore without creating anything, there is premade content for everything except cell stage.

I think I should give it a try, to be honest. It’ll be one of the “Black & White”-experiences for me: Either play it all the way, all the time, or not at all. Let’s find out.
