Dead Space hasn’t been banned in Germany, say Germans

September 5th, 2008 @ 14:47

Eurogamer.de’s scotched a report that said Dead Space had already been banned in Germany. Basically, it hasn’t.

The site’s spoken to EA Germany, and the game is still with the USK, apparently, so no one knows yet if there are going to be any restrictions on the horror’s launch.

The original information came from Dead Space community manager Andrew Green, who said in a Destructoid story that the game had been banned in Germany, Japan and China.

Thanks, wz!

  1. pat: I’m not sure how fast they are with updating, but you can always try this site here, http://www.usk.de/65_Aktuell_geprueft.htm .

  2. Oooh, nice. Ta.

    You German?

  3. And I’ve added a thanks for you :-D

  4. Woohoo! :D

Yeah, I’m living in Germany, near Heidelberg. One day, I’m gonna write an article for you about the German USK system.
Because this “banning” isn’t banning as in censorship, technically, but restrictions on advertising and sale.
The effect is of course the same, but to be really banned, a game has to do worse things than show violence, like glorifying Nazi Germany or sport other anticonstitutional elements.

  5. Might take you up on that :)

  6. Well, thats not entirely correct. Technically violence is enough to get a game banned - or “beschlagnahmt” as we say here. Since 2003, there were “just” four games that were actually “beschlagnahmt”.

The German Penal Code (StGB) explicitly allows for games to be banned due to excessive and inhuman violence against humans and similars, if the violence is glorified or allows the killing to be displayed in an inhuman or gruesome way. (actually, the legal situation is a tad more complex but you get the picture…)

More on that, even though in german, can be found here.

Other than the “Beschlagnahmung”, we also have the “Indizierung”. But I will leave that to WZ :-)

  7. I perfectly saw that coming - glorification of violence can be anti-constitutional, yes :D

  8. well, if you put it that way…:D

    greetings from the Ruhrpott :-)
