SOCOM beta battered by demand, Sony working on load issues
September 6th, 2008 @ 09:24

Speaking in this official blog post, SCEA’s Seth Luisi has apologised to load issues to to high demand for the SOCOM beta, saying everything should be fixed by the end of next week.
“Due to overwhelming demand for the SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation Public Beta, we are experiencing load related issues,” he said.
“These issues are causing abnormal latency, disconnects, long load times, login errors and community features such as clans and stats not functioning correctly (or at all).
“We are doing everything we can to resolve these issues as quickly as possible and you should see some improvements progressively over the next couple of days. However, we do not expect to have the issues completely resolved until close to the end of next week.
“We apologize for the inconvenience.”
Shooting people for free is clearly the new black. Game’s out on September 16.

Did they accidentally give away twice as many keys as they thought they would?
/does not understand how you can not know how much demand there will be for a limited beta,,,

Indeed, sounds like bad management really.

Especially since so many people will be put off from buying now. The game certainly can’t rely on it’s looks.
I am certainly not gonna buy the heap of crap when the real Socom is out next year under the name MAG.

That’s not really an excuse for not having capacity in place… especially when you know exactly how many keys you gave out.
September 6th, 2008 at 3:37 pm
Well, I think they didn’t realise how popular Socom might be to be fair.
And people just like being beta testers.

That wasn’t my point No_PUD. They gave out 6k keys in Europe and (I believe) 10k keys for the rest of the world. If you’re putting together the infrastructure you build it on the assumption that 80% of those people will want to connect day one.

I doubt they were putting the infrastructure together though. I expect it’s got some servers that were expected to deal with the load, and keepign track of how many were involved led to this.
They just didn’t realise how popular it would be basically.

PUD: So they believed a bunch of guys do get some keys, and the gross will be left untouched? Or that most people get the keys just in case, not really planning to play?

This is exactly why betas exist, they went in thinking their servers could cope now they know better and will tweak things…. it’s kinda the point of the whole thing.
Most betas these days are pretty much publicity stunts but looks like this one might be a real one.
