Japanese hardware sales: 360 takes third week over PS3
October 6th, 2008 @ 07:51

Blimey. Media Create sales have shown Xbox 360 beating PS3 for a third week straight in Japan, and with the Microsoft console having also racked up a win over the Sony machine in the entire month of September, it’s going to be all smiles in the green camp this morning, no doubt.
Wii and DS cream it, obviously. When don’t they? Last week’s figures here. Data for the week ending September 28.
- DS - 57,847
- Wii - 26,314
- PSP - 25,671
- Xbox 360 - 11,291
- PS2 - 9,848
- PS3 - 8,275

Well it’s finally happened: the PS2 has outsold the PS3. Unbelievable.

There were some pretty high profile PS2 games out last week. There were a couple of PS3 games in the top 10 though. Although they don’t appear to have shifted any hardware. And didn’t sell very many.
Actually, I wonder if they’d have sold some PS3s off the back of those high-profile PS2 games if the PS3s were still BC?

It’s bizarre, the whole situation.

When’s Grand Theft Auto out? They might sell a few PS3s for that.

December, if memory serves. I think they’re banking on LBP globally for Christmas.
October 6th, 2008 at 8:49 am
I’m not convinced about the Japanese and LBP.

Valkyria Chronicles is already out isn’t it? FFXIII will obviously shift some machines as will White Knight Story.
October 6th, 2008 at 8:55 am
neither am I since a lot of western developers just seem to fail over there.
October 6th, 2008 at 8:58 am
Valkyria was out months ago and didn’t do very well. FFXIII is a long way off. White Knight… yes. But I don’t think it’ll be a huge success.
The run up to Christmas should be interesting. Obviously the Wii, DS and PSP will cane it. But what will Sony and Microsoft do to try and flog their kit, I wonder? More bundles, I suspect, but Microsoft have the better games for bundling in at the minute. And if the GTA DLC really is available before Christmas, Microsoft could launch it in Japan alongside the game.
It’ll be interesting to see what Sony’s got up it’s sleeve at TGS this week. They’d better have something for their own sakes.

Wii, DS and PSP are in a market of their own though, so they don’t really compare, imo.
October 6th, 2008 at 9:00 am
I’m with you both on the LBP thing. Mr Yoshida seemed very confident about it, though.
October 6th, 2008 at 9:01 am
Of course, Microsoft have already announced this. Which should serve them quite nicely.

LOL
Good grief!
The worst part about this for Sony is not losing out to the 360, but the fact that the PS3 has sold less than the PS2.
Surely this just rams home the point that the PS2 was, and still is simply a better console than its successor. It dosn’t have Blu-Ray.
It doesn’t have the Cell.
No Sixaxis, no PSN, no Next-gen bells or whistles…
How do you manage to take a console and utterly negelct the reason for its success when designing its successor??? Lets face it, GAMERS are buying the PS2 and the 360 in bigger numbers than the PS3 for one simple reason.
THE GAMES!
And all this in Sony’s very ‘back yard’ of Japan.
What an epic fail.

Arnt you the biased one G1GA, one month the 360 outsells the PS3 and its their end, despite sales for all the other months both consoles have been out for, where the PS3 has outsold the 360… You could, you know, put it down to nearly nothing being released on PS3 last month? Nah, PS3 IZ DAH SUXXOZS!!!111
October 6th, 2008 at 9:48 am
It’s been “the end” for much longer than a month. For both of them.
October 6th, 2008 at 9:57 am
Didn’t someone from Sony claim that the 360 figures could be attributed to people re-buying the console for limited edition bundles and the like.
October 6th, 2008 at 10:00 am
I’m not sure even Sony would be silly enough to say something like that… given it’s exactly the same trick they’ve pulled with ltd edition hardware, bundles, new colours etc etc.

@ Gekidami
I’m simply commenting on the figures.
I never said it was the end at all. I’m sure that Sony will throw enough money into marketing the PS3 to make it work, but right now, the figures say it all.
No-one would have expected the PS2 to be outselling the PS3 at this point in their life-cycles, just like it’s really difficult to imagine the GBA ouselling the DS a year or two after its release.
I’m sure it’s not the end, but lets just say that this is a real low in the PS3’s ‘10 year plan’.
October 6th, 2008 at 10:04 am
On a slightly different note… the next few weeks should be interesting for the DS. If buyers are well informed we should see sales drop off a cliff for it because of the impending new model.
I’m not sure how informed they are though.

*predicts*
DSi will sell out everywhere and the things will be like gold dust to find. It’ll be the DS launch all over again with long queues and inflated prices in the streets and online.

You are Michael Pachter AICM£5.
October 6th, 2008 at 11:49 am
I was getting used to seeing the PSP on top. What happened to the DS? Or is it the PSP that is doing bad?
October 6th, 2008 at 12:11 pm
Neither are doing badly… for badly see PS3 and 360.
DS got some games released. PSP is due new hardware (as will the DS be as of next week’s results).
