MotionPlus tech was too expensive for Wii launch, says Reggie

Speaking to VentureBeat, NoA boss Reggie Fils-Aime has claimed that Wii MotionPlus was too expensive to be implemented at Wii’s launch.
We were aware of that technology at the time we designed the original Wii,” he said.
“But the cost would have been too high for the business model. It would have been unacceptable.
By waiting about three years, the costs come down substantially and it becomes a viable product,” he said.
So that’s why you don’t have a “proper” light saber game. More through the link.

I wish they had used better technology, to be honest. Their sensor bar technology really isn’t all that great.
I say this as a person with sight difficulties who has to sit near the screen and can’t wear glasses or do anything to improve said sight. I can use Ninty’s peculiar control system, but only with great difficulty. It’s a matter of finding a sweet spot between not having eye-strain and the remote actually still working at all.
Maybe they’ll have newfangled remote technology available eventually and I’ll give the Wii a look again then, but at the moment it isn’t my favourite console because of those accessibility concerns. I can’t help but wonder how much better the performance would’ve been if they had used different technology to achieve the same goals.
Just some random head-dumpage anyway.
