On Kotaku. The PSP RPG is looking very nice from these screens, and will likely to well on the platform thanks to a lack of competition. The game’s out in Europe on October 24. Please send copies, Square.

Take a look.

  1. I saw a movie of this a little bit ago that had some screenshots embedded too, it’s easy enough to find on Youtube but actually having screenshots that aren’t flying around is so much better. One can actually make out what’s going on in them that way.

    But I digress.

This one’s actually just the SNES Star Ocean with some nice cartoon scenes thrown in. This is by no means a bad thing, because the SNES Star Ocean was the only Star Ocean not to go awful halfway through (at the second disc). Did anyone else notice that or was it just me?

In Star Ocean 2, the adventure was great… the whole tower thing and everything. And then, boom. Disc 2, suddenly you get inside the mysterious gas cloud of doom, and in there be Elves beseiged by monsters that have no idea that their subreality is ravaging other Worlds. It’s like they fired their plot-writers half way through.

The first part of Star Ocean 3 was art in motion, it had grand characters and a really great plot going for it. And it was interesting finally facing off against the faceless Borg-like beings whose sole purpose was apparently to eradicate all life in the Universe, seeing life as some kind of disease. I was gearing up for a big battle with them when… I pop out of a TV screen and suddenly I’m in a subreality in which Earth and its Universe is a game. Apparently this is the 4th dimension (giggle) and geeks can hax my code to give me health boosts. I quit at about that point, I couldn’t take it. I mean, they forced me to fight alter-reality SWAT teams whilst a rapper was telling me to shake my body and hurt nobody in the background! It was too much.

Please let the eventual PS3 Star Ocean not be like that, Square-Enix? Please? Let it be awesome all the way through with no subrealities? Okay?

But this is all besides the point, Star Ocean was free of this corruption, and those who haven’t played the fan translation should most certainly play this.

  2. Well, we have SO4 on the 360 first..

  3. Can’t wait for this one.

  4. @ecu

I already know this. But I don’t care if they swamp the 360ers with subreality silliness, as long as the eventual PS3 Star Ocean game will have none of that. And knowing the way Square-Enix work, there will indeed eventually be a PS3 game. They’re very multi-platform friendly.

  5. Star Ocean 4 is also playable at TGS, too. Be interested to see what people think of that.
