Ease of use overrated, Nintendo Points non-transferrable between Wii and DSi

October 8th, 2008 @ 06:38

Well, that’s not entirely true. Nintendo has provided customers with a handy, easy-to-use chart. Unfortunately, it comes inextricably tied to news that, in spite of their new, console-free name, Nintendo Points will not transfer between the two most recent additions to Nintendo’s pillar collection.

According to Siliconera, download-seekers will have to dedicate each Nintendo Point card they purchase to a single console. No back-and-forth.

On the bright side, though, the DSi is still a ways off from journeying to the West, so there’s always the outside chance that Nintendo might come down with a terrible case of sanity and change this perplexing policy.

We can only hope.

  1. How could it be any different? The account is tied to the console itself on Wii (so presumably the same will be true of DSi).

There’ll be some almighty complaining when DSi units break and people lose their games.

  2. Surely a person having a single account would have made more sense, innit?

  3. At the very least you should be able to send points to people. i.e, transfer points from one system to the other.

  4. Yeah personal accounts like (Xbox Live/PSN) would be miles better but they’ve already gone with console-based accounts on Wii so there’s no practical way to have an account straddling two machines.

I think Nintendo went this way to keep it simple but there are a lot of disadvantages when it comes to replacing broken machines (I *think* you can ask for the games to be transferred) and it’s going to be a real pisser when they bring out a new console and people realise they can’t carry over their retro collection from VC.
