LBP bundle confirmed for October 31 in Europe, DS bundles stay East

SCEE just confirmed to VG247 that its LittleBigPlanet bundle will launch in Europe on October 31.

The pack will contain the game, an 80Gb PS3 and a DualShock 3 for £299.

It doesn’t sound like the cute DualShock 3 packs containing nothing but the controller and the game are going to make it out of Japan, either: a rep told us this morning that the machine pack was the “only” LBP bundle being offered in Europe.

LittleBigPlanet releases on October 24.

  1. There you go, Tonka. Any more ideas for stories, just let me know :D

  2. Great stuff!
As for the next story. I have this vague memory of reading a dev diary by the guys who came up with Fable and neither of them were Peter Molineux.

It was either in edge or IGN. But now all you hear is Peter “I’m no PR man” Molinjö taking all the credit.

What’s up with that I wonder.

Real shame about the missing controller PAK. It could have lifted the PS3 image up to Game 3.0 standards.

  3. I’ll do my best with that. Hopefully Lionhead with become less busy in the next few months.

  4. About 100quid too expensive.

  5. Right…. now all I need is for a retailer to stick another controller in with that for £299 and I’m sorted.

  6. Better, but still no cake.

  7. They should stick a platinum game and another controller in there with that, and then I think they’d be getting somewhere. They’re clearly somewhat hamstrung by the manufacturing cost of the console to lower the base price right now, but they certainly need to look at the ‘value’ side of the console, to tempt people.

  8. Pro-tip: Wait for the Jan/Feb sales.

A few of the places that will have no doubt overstocked will possibly knock even the hoped-for £100 off the retail price-tag. Or throw in extras to sweeten the deal.

As for me, I own a PS3 already but that doesn’t matter right now because I’m just going into LBP withdrawal symptoms now that the beta has ended…

TIME, MAKE IT BE THE 24TH!

  9. Yeah, I’m not in any major rush. Not for a 9/10 game anyway. ;)

    /sprints

  10. An 8/10 game, you mean? We all know that’s what they were really thinking!

Still, I don’t give a damn about arbitrary numbers. WANT. MAKE. THINGS. Why does Sony mock us faithful so?

  11. Because you’re faithful?

    Just an idea.

  12. Here it is. I rememebr reading they had thought about Ego/Fable for many many years. All of a sudden they were out of the picture and it was all about Molinjö

  13. @morriss

    Probably.

    /sad

Still, I can wait. There’s always World of Goo to drive me absolutely crazy until the 24th.

  14. Now I don’t have a DS3 so I’d have jumped at a bundle with LBP. Sony are missing out on free money!

Quite frankly they should do those sort of bundles with most of their new games.

  15. @Tonka: See if you watch this week’s episode of Playr on Bravo TV’s web site. It’s a half-hour episode dedicated to Fable 2, and includes lots of interviews with all three guys who were responsible for inventing Fable, not just Peter. :-)

  16. Man, I have my finger on the pulse all right.
What is Jeff Minter up to? (that is my next sagely tip)

  17. Jeff’s doing yet another remake of Gridrunner for XBLA.

  18. JPickford - you think the PS3 plus LBP should cost only £20 more than the Wii? Really?

    That’s just silly.

Jeff is also doing the backgrounds for Space Invaders on XBOX Live Arcade \O/

  20. Don’t knock Gridrunner++ (or the forthcoming +++), it’s an incredible shooter. Huge depth. Love it!

VIC 20 and C64 originals look like they’ll be in GR+++ when it hits XBLA later too.

    Minter > Braid/Halo 3

  21. @Cort. Yeah, I think it should be about 200 quid tops including a game. Nothing Silly about that.

What does the price Wii have to do with anything?

Do you think all consoles have to be priced according to each others relative power\manufacturing costs? Do Sony\MS have to wait for Nintendo to drop their prices before dropping their own?

  22. The Wii is ludicrously overpriced for what it is… but then until people stop buying it that’s not going to change. I don’t think people are going to stop buying it. :o

  23. Wii’s overpriced too. :-D

  24. Oh, snap!

  25. Of course it is (going by what it must cost to make). But it’s great value in terms of entertainment - especially for a living room\family console.

I want a PS3 but 300quid looks like poor value compared to the (more relevant) Xbox 360 which can be had for half that.

  26. Braid is shit.

  27. You shut your whore mouth!

    /backhands

  28. Oyi!

If Tonka’s doing it, I am jumping in!

Put this in your pipe, Tonka! :P XD

  29. “What does the price Wii have to do with anything?”

In this context, everything. Where the price of a product is pitched is highly relevant to the price and perceived value of other products you share the marketplace with. One can argue all day along about target demographics, the simple point is they share shelf space and compete in the same retail sector.

Wii overpriced? The only inherent monetary value of any product is the cost of the materials, labour, shipping etc. The fact that the Wii sells so well at £179 (which is below the price one could reasonably describe as “profiteering”) tells us that the product is not overpriced: that’s what the market bears, so very clearly. If sales drop considerably and the price remains the same, one could then consider it was overpriced.

I believe that the PS3 holds much better value than the Wii and that the market will warm to a £249 price point (once the enhanced manufacturing processes permit such a reduction). £299 is still too high as evidenced by its performance against cheaper rivals. Of course, value shifts according to the amount of money available, as we are seeing in such start terms across the economy as a whole.

  30. The only context I had in mind was what I would feel happy about paying for a PS3. And 200 quid feels about right to me with a game thrown in. The Wii doesn’t enter into it for me as I already have one and there’s almost no overlap in software.

I also have a 360 which is currently half the price and has a LOT of overlap.

I still fail to see anything silly in suggesting a 200quid price which is still more than you’d pay for its closest competitor.

  31. I understand that a £200 price tag is good for you, JP, and there’s nothing wrong with that.

However, consider it from a different viewpoint.

The XBox has bundles which go for over £200, and the hardware of the PS3 is vastly superiour (look it up if you don’t want to take my word for it). It might not look like it is at the moment, but that’s for two reasons: third-party developers haven’t wrapped their mind around the hardware yet because it’s a little weird, and games have to be scaled down for multi-platform releases (the graphics of GTA IV were scaled back for this purpose).

Plus, there’s that blu-ray equation to consider. Whether you want it or not is irrelevant, the fact of the matter is that it’s there, and any games developed exclusively for the PS3 are going to take advantage of the extra disc capacity available.

Whilst £200 might seem reasonable to the punter on the street, saying that the PS3 should sell for less than the 360 Elite sounds really silly to anyone who knows what’s packed inside the PS3.

And I suspect it also results in whispers going on behind people’s backs, of the ilk of: That guy’s crazy, he wants a PS3 for £200 despite the retail tag. I wonder if he’s going to start offering us live poultry next to sweeten the deal?

I agree that the PS3’s price-tag needs to come down, but I think there’s a sane price point for it too, and one that isn’t completely disrespectful to the hardware packed into the PS3.

It’s really like trying to go into PC World and telling the nice man behind the counter that you don’t feel the price on the £5,000 gaming laptop is right, that you have £500 on you and that’s what you’re paying for it, like it or lump it.

You don’t have to buy a PS3 after all, but saying the PS3 is worth just £200 is silly, perhaps it’s only silly to some of us, but that’s what opinions and points of perspective do.

  32. That’s a pretty convoluted argument. Not convinced.

Respect for the hardware? Pfft. Respect for the customer is what’s missing here. If Sony build in expensive features I don’t want than that’s their problem not mine.

They could have added an attachment for making holes in donuts but that doesn’t make the machine worth any more to me.

You’ve gone from saying I’m silly to suggesting I’ve got mental health issues. Do you read your own posts back?

  33. I definitely want to get a PS3 and LBP looks absolutely fantastic but i wont be paying £300. That’s just too much even if i had some spare cash. £200 is much more like it but ill probably have to wait at least a year for that sort of price. lucky for me i was brought up in the age of modem that breeds inhuman levels of patience.
