Speaking at an Apple product event tonight, Steve Jobs has slammed Blu-ray for being too expensive and too complex.
“Blu-ray is just a bag of hurt,” he said.
“It’s great to watch the movies, but the licensing of the tech is so complex, we’re waiting till things settle down and Blu-ray takes off in the marketplace.”
The comments aren’t likely to go down well with, well, people that like Blu-ray.

I thought now would be the best time. HD-DVD is dead and it would be a good chance to sneak in some early market share.

Apple is on the board, but Blue ray doesn’t have enough to lure them in at the moment. Plus Apple is also very much promoting downloadable content like MS, when BR becomes a major player or compelling enough to be included in Macs, they will jump on board. But don’t hold your breath.

Hmm. Considering the amount of hoops you have to jump through to get your digital content running on an Apple-centric marketplace I’d say the guy knows all about bags of hurt.
Gimped, bespoke, closed-source hardware and media is not something Apple should be butting their heads against so much. It might look a bit hypocritical.

Isn’t Jobs complaining about Blu-ray being too expensive a bit like Hitler complaining that the KKK is too racist?
This man really is a first-class tool. At least when I buy a PS3 or BD player I know that I own it. Nobody owns an Apple product; they lease it.

BTW: Apple makes wonderful products and innovated the industry again and again, which doesn’t mean that all Steve Jobs says is beyond any doubt.

Apple innovated the way tech is introduced.
They give you a barebones model then slowly piss out the tech into it. Making you buy each model :P.

I’m with Jobs on this one. I don’t agree with what he’s yammering on about, per se, but I do agree that this is not the right time to include Blu-ray in Macs.
At the moment, aside from indie and the amazingly rare bone tossed its way, Apple hardware isn’t for gaming. It’s not for home theatre either, there’s better hardware out there for that, too. An Apple is an absolutely fantastic application base, and is better suited to companies these days than the humble PC, so that’s what it does.
Fitting that kind of machine with a Blu-ray drive makes no sense whatsoever.
The PC isn’t that much better off either, there’d be no games to immediately support the extra capacity of Blu-ray, and having a tiny monitor isn’t the best way to take advantage of the wonderful things that Blu-ray can do. So for the time being, even on the PC it’s not the best thing.
Blu-ray is more suited to being a player, sitting in a home theatre system, or as part of a console where everyone knows the capabilities of what they’re developinig for. On the PS3, Blu-ray is the only choice so PS3 exclusive titles are designed to take advantage of all the hardware, including Blu-ray (ex: BioShock).
Apple and the humble PC are still better suited to media downloads at the moment. I have a laptop and generally I treat it like a glorified iPod, because I don’t really need to have Blu-ray quality video for such a small screen.
