BioShock dev details new features in PS3 version

October 15th, 2008 @ 07:19

Speaking to PSU, 2K Marin programmer Jake Etgeton has laid out improvements in the PS3 version of BioShock, detailing the joy of “interactive load screens”.

“There are improvements, such as interactive load screens which takes advantage of the increased space on the Blu-ray disc,” he said.

“The downloadable Challenge Rooms also offer a slew of new graphical and gameplay content, albeit outside of the fictional universe.”

He added: “BioShock PS3 uses a standard one-time 5 GB install. It only takes 10 minutes, and there’s even a fancy movie accompanied by Bing Crosby’s ‘You’re Getting to Be a Habit with Me’ to help pass the time if you’re not off making a tasty, preparatory sandwich.

“Installing to the PS3 hard drive allows us to ’stream’ textures and audio faster than the Blu-ray drive can deliver.”

More through there. Game’s out this week.

  1. In the end bioshock will be a good port…

  2. I poked the demo a few days back, it seems like it’ll be a very good port indeed. If only all developers could work towards each console’s strengths, instead of scaling down to the lowest end of the current generation and releasing copies of that across all the consoles available now.

Happened in the 16-bit days too. Quite annoying.

There are examples of people doing it right though, and BioShock is indeed one of them.

  3. those extra whistles could easily have been on the 360 or PC version. The whole Blu ray drive crap has been disproved more times than I can count.

This is just a case of Sony throwing money at 2k in order to get some extra’s to justifie the extra cost of there console.

  4. Blu Ray has addional space so why not add extra content in the game. You need to stop being such a fan-d***.
Typical xbox fanboy that’s got the ball’s to say Sony are throwing money around for extras when it’s MS trying to take all of PS3 exclusives. You make me laugh.

  5. I am wondering what ‘Blu ray crap’ has been disproved, Dave?

  6. Eesh.

The chap says that the extra capacity of the Blu-ray disc (which has more to do with Blu-ray technology than the console as a whole) format allows them to add more content in and some 360-fan goes nuts?

I find this ironic after the many weeks of Microsoft exclusives with shady developers doing their “LoL, we make games for the 360 because it’s better but we’re not gunna tell you why it’s better, wink wink.” thing, and Microsoft themselves openly having a go at bashing whatever pleases them at the time.

Sony, on the other hand, has been fairly well behaved and hasn’t given doom-sayers lots of material to work with.

And what do I see here? I see scraping the barrel. Surprise, surprise.

    Got any examples?

  8. Esha. You and me. Let’s get a room.
