Sony: LittleBigPlanet to be recalled on global level because of Qur’an content
October 17th, 2008 @ 17:08

SCEE has just confirmed to VG247 that shipped LittleBigPlanet units are to be recalled on a global level thanks to a licensed track in the game containing two “expressions” from the Qur’an.
It was thought this afternoon that shipped units of the game were to be pulled back in Europe, but the move will be made “worldwide,” Sony’s just told us.
When asked how many units are to be recalled, a SCEE rep said, “We haven’t been given any figures.”
SCEE has made a just made a statement on the issue, saying the game will be delayed as a result of the issue, but hasn’t confirmed a new release date as yet.

Isn’t the singer of the song a Muslim who released this song in a Muslim dominated country?
This is obsurd!

A mate of mine who isn’t into games, oddly remembered this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kakuto_Chojin#Reception_and_controversy
looks like MS played it safe with that one too.
interesting how a guy not into games remembered that and i’d never heard of it - although i never had an xbox though. could be a good marketing thing after all?
October 17th, 2008 at 5:35 pm
@warlock: I think you are the one who is intolerant. If you read the qur’an you will see that Allah is tolerant.

October 17th, 2008 at 5:42 pm
Bah. Love the game, but this political correctness is going on my tits. Preorder cancelled, waiting for the bargain bin now.

“Obviously MM and Sony together took this very seriously. LBP should be enjoyable by all. So within 12 hours of hearing about this issue involving a lyric (in Somalian, I believe!), we prepared an automatic day 0 patch and had a new disk image ready; however a decision was made within Sony that the right thing to do for quality and support of people with no on-line was to replace existing disks. They assure us that they are doing everything in their power to get things straightened out as fast as possible, and will announce dates soon.”

Muslims seem to be extraordinarily offended by anything relating to their religion.
/cartoon says the word ‘Mohammed’
/offended Muslims burn embassies down
It’s comical. Until, well, you realise it actually happened. :/ I just can’t relate to them at all.

That’s nothing ecu. You try telling a 360 owner that “Halo ain’t all that”. He’ll put a fatwah on you faster than Aaron Greenberg can say something stupid.

It’s fine to be angry about a game being delayed because of something you yourself do not believe in, but some of the comments on the Eurogamer news story are just plain insulting.
October 17th, 2008 at 6:35 pm
I’ve seen plenty of utterly retarded comments about this. Including the suggestion of murdering the guy that made the original post on the Sony site.
If I thought I’d get through I’d try to explain just how utterly hypocritical comments like that are… but I just don’t think they’d get it.
October 17th, 2008 at 6:38 pm
Sony is on a roll this generation… and not in a good way.

Ankle? Why would I be interested in the appetiser when I’ve already had the main course and looked on in horror at the desert?
October 17th, 2008 at 6:47 pm
WOW, The EuroGamer comments thread is absolutely revolting! Does anyone evn monitor or moderate the comments over there? Lame…
October 17th, 2008 at 6:48 pm
Hey, if they don’t do it they get blown up by some muslim psychopath. Personally I’d tell them to eat shit and don’t buy the game. Why is so much of the world so quick to bow down to these thugs, goons, and bullies? I know it is fear and I understand that, but people need to stop bowing down and start fighting this kind of intolerant crap. People make fun of Jesus and God all the time, and while Christians and Jews may not like it, they are open to the idea that their faith is strong enough to survive, or they, like me, believe that Jesus and God would have a pretty good sense of humor (example? Nick Cage’s continuing career).
You are not the only people in the world, muslims. Not everyone fears you. Get used to it or get run over.
This is crap!
October 17th, 2008 at 6:51 pm
Oi… it’s one thing insulting Muslims, but you stay the hell away from Nicky Cage.
>:(
…and no mort, there’s virtually no EG moderation on the comments.
October 17th, 2008 at 7:02 pm
Good lord. That thread is ghastly.
You know, gamers (hey, we’re generalising about cultures here so I see no reason to introduce inconsistencies in our appraisals) are typically so quick to lash out at the subject of their ire that they nearly always end up making themselves look far far worse that whoever it is they’re pointing the finger at.
It doesn’t matter if it’s a religious group. A politician. A lawyer or some person on TV who made some comment and happens to have a book on Amazon.
One day, gamers will learn not to make themselves look like intolerant spoiled brats. Until then, you can see why most of the world takes a glance and just disregards the culture as a bunch of bickering kids who can’t be trusted to look after themselves.

@RedPanda
Kakuto Chojin was actually a pretty good game, graphically wise it was insane for a last-gen game!
@ecu
Be careful!G1GAHURTZ will get angry at you

That’s not very long.
Still I’m not amused by what two lines in a song can cause.
And the responses made by some.
October 17th, 2008 at 7:51 pm
The one thing we don’t know… is how long this shipping part of the process will take. Technically LBP shipped to stores a couple of weeks back so this doesn’t necessarily clarify much.
October 17th, 2008 at 7:56 pm
I suppose it will reach the major stores in a matter of a few days.
October 17th, 2008 at 8:08 pm
It’s going to be a tough call to please retailers on this one. Everyone is going to have to get a decent level of stock simultaneously or heads will roll.
October 17th, 2008 at 8:15 pm
Holy clusterfuck, Batman!
What a shame.
