DiRT Rally is the newest rally game from veteran video game developers Codemasters, out exclusively for PC on Windows.

Rally games have been a mainstay of video gaming from way back in the earliest of console days. Whether it's the more outlandish games like Roadrash or early attempts at video game realism with the Formula One games on the NES, racing and video games have long been friends. It wasn't really until the original Playstation that we got a real, honest to goodness rally game in Codemasters first outing into Rally: Colin McRae Rally.

Since those early days Codemasters have gone through twelve iterations up to this one, DiRT Rally. Some iterations have been less well received including their attempt at mobile gaming and some elements of the DiRT series been less favourably received such as the gymkhana sections. But overall the series has improved with each new release, including more content, developments in the physics engines and beefing up the graphics.

DiRT Rally might be their finest game yet. Even though it's still in Early Access, basically meaning it's in a buyable, playable alpha stage, it's packed full of content and is ready to thrill even the most hardened rally fan. It has the usual set of options including different transmission settings and a range of adjustable driving aids including ABS.

The game modes available to you will be familiar but enjoyable, time trials and versus competitions are all here. There are three locations currently, Monaco, Greece and Wales and 17 cars to choose from ranging from Classic 60's models up to modern day beasts. As you complete races you are awarded with credits based on your finishing position and overall performance and you use these credits to unlock new tracks and new cars.

Whether you're new to the genre or an avid rally fan, there's something here for you. The learning curve is steep and new players may find it hard to handle but with the driving assists and a bit of perseverance you'll slip right in. The fact that it's in Early Access means it's not feature complete yet but there's more than enough to be carrying on with and more content coming as well.
